Sunday Praise: What’s Made Me Happy this Week?

  • I treated myself to a gorgeous Woodwick candle this week, and it smells yummy.
  • In this week’s Adventures in Baking, Stella and I made Jammie Dodgers!
  • In preparation for my end of year blog posts, I realised that I have managed to reduce the 746 by 52! I think that’s been my best year yet. Must try harder though…
  • I had to chat on the radio yesterday morning and I am now very happy…that it’s over! I get so nervous when I have to do things like this.
  • I’m a little late to the party, but I found out this week that the brilliant Willy Vlautin has a new book coming out early next year. Cause for celebration!
  • I’m not usually one for TV Christmas specials but was delightd to hear that there will be a new Black Mirror (“Death to 2020“) and a Ghosts Christmas Special
  • I am loving following the Irish Women in History page on Facebook. They are posting about an exceptional Irish woman every day from now until Nollaig na mBan (‘Women’s Christmas) on January 6th.
  • Now that it’s officially December and the festive season, my alternative Christmas playlist has been getting an outing, featuring this beauty from Tracey Thorn…

So, what in your life deserves some praise this week? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I’ve just put this album on my Christmas list (a present to myself). I can’t stop buying for myself this year as there are so many great books coming out and people don’t seem to buy me books any more, figuring that I’ll have already got them/ So far I’ve bought Walking with Ghosts, Gabriel Byrne’s autobiography (what a brilliant writer he is), the Clive James book of his favourite poems with comments from the man himself (The Fire of Joy) and yesterday was delivered Old Ireland in Colour by John Breslin & Sarah-Ann Buckley which was referred to by Marie at https://hopsskipsandjumps.com/. And again, what joy this book is.

There’s still 3 weeks to go so who knows what else will fall into my Christmas stocking>!

      • I made Jammie Dodgers once just cos they are pretty and they are so much nicer home made. This was a lovely post. I have a new office mate who has totally different musical taste from me so I can no longer fill my office with Tracey Thorn’s absolutely beautiful and tender Christmas music otherwise it will become a battle. I make do with headphones now, it’s not the same not being able to welcome people with a bit of soothing calm. And the thought of what the Ghosts might get up to at Christmas is something to look forward to.

  2. Cathy, it has been a tough week, but it was lightened by the fact I was able to do some Christmas shopping, to start putting up my Christmas decorations and watch some festive comfort films. 🎄 You and your daughters homemade jammie dodgers look great! It also sounds like the Literary Emporium might be a dangerous place for me to visit… 😅 Take care in the coming week and happy reading. 🙂

  3. I’ve added Jammie Dodgers to my list of recipes to try. I don’t think they are available in the supermarkets here but I think I remember them from my childhood. Relatives in the UK used to send my grandmother a tin of biscuits every Christmas so perhaps that is where they came from.

  4. Those yummy treats looks really good. I was not aware that that is what they are called.
I’ve been wanting a nice candle but never got one and now we are locked down. No trips for anything unless essential and candles are probably not. Although the power could go out anytime due to these crazy winds.
